I’m sure at one point or another you went to the store, purchased a new skincare product that you got really excited about, went home and immediately tried it out. And then you saw no immediate results. Your skin did not suddenly become all clear, healthy and glowing. Let me tell you: some products actually need time and consistency to start working or to show their full effect. So how long does it take for until skincare products start working and to show their results? Lets have a look!

Cleanser

Cleansers actually start working right when you first use it. It obviously right away removes make up, dirt and cleans your skin of everything that is on it’s surface. At least the good ones do.
But even though it clears the surface, don’t expect to a miracle to happen right this second. Good cleansing will help you unclogg your pores, get rid of impurities and reach your skin goals. But it will take consistency! So don’t give up just now.
Start using the same cleanser every single day for at least 2-3 weeks to see if you like it and how your skin is reacting to it. When these weeks have passed, then you can judge if this is the right product for you or if you want to move on to another cleanser.

Btw.: my favorite cleanser comes with a cleansing (and anti-ageing) tool and I would 100% recommend it! You can find more info on the LumiSpa here.

Toner

There are two main types of Toners: the exfoliating ones or the ones which focus on balancing the pH-Level of your skin. Whatever one you choose, expect it to take at least 1-2 weeks to show its potential. You may see results sooner, for example in the hydration of your skin. But for redness, irritations and pore size, expect to see results after 1-2 weeks of consistent use.

Toners are liquid moisturizers that help to enhance the skin’s surface. They often contain antioxidants, soothing agents and ingredients that nourish the skin. It is best to use a toner right after cleansing your face to give your skin a perfect base of the rest of your skincare products.

Exfoliant

With some exfoliants you can literally see results over night. Especially if you use a chemical exfoliant like an AHA or BHA. They can instantly make your skin feel smoother and the skin’s surface more even.
Other exfoliants need more consistency to actually do what they are supposed to, so you may need to have between 2 to 4 weeks of patience with them.

The full effect of regular exfoliation becomes visible over time. Enlarged pores can look smaller, dullness fades and the skin looks more vibrant thanks to not being covered in dead skin cells. Even breakouts or acne which can be caused by clogged pores will get better over time. And signs of ageing may appear less visible and the skin tones can become evened out.

Moisturizer

Moisturizers give your skin instant hydration (if used correctly). You can expect overnight improvement with the right product. But the real effect with enhanced appearance and more glow will become visible after 2-8 weeks. So using the same product for an extended amount of time will show you more precisely if you are on the right path.

My all time favorite tip for using moisturizer: apply it to damp skin! The moisturizer will lock the water into your skin, making it so much more effective.

Serum

Serums are a long-term thing. They contain a lot of active ingredients which need time to start working. Depending on the ingredients it may take between 4 to 6 weeks before you can expect to see a difference in your skin.

For example serums with Vitamin C or Niacinamide, which are some of the more popular serum ingredients, you can expect to see results after 4 weeks or longer. Other ingredients may even take more time to show what they are capable off. So don’t be discouraged, try it for at least 6 weeks and see if you like it then.

Retinol

Although Retinol is technically not a skincare product categorie, it is very well known and trending right now so I thought it would be good to include it in this list.

It’s important to know that Retinol is an active ingredient derived from Vitamin A. It is a skin-renewing and repairing ingredient that is especially know for it’s potential as an anti-aging ingredient. It increases cell turnover and enhances collagen production. As these qualities might suggest already, retinol products should be thought of as a long-term project. It may take them between 4-12 weeks to show results.
In the beginning you may even see your skin purging and peeling itself off a bit. This is normal and should not discourage you from using it. But be careful not to overuse it and be especially careful when you go out into the sun. Direct UV light can be very harmful after retinol use and purging as your skin is almost stripped bare. So make sure you use an SPF at all times during the day!
